Anxious wait for kin stranded in Uttarakhand
Bengaluru: For Girish, a resident of Dharwad, it has been an anxious wait for his family members, currently on a visit to Uttarakhand, which is witnessing heavy rains.
However on Sunday there was some relief after he received a call at 6.30 pm stating that all his 12 family members were safe and somewhere in Kedarnath. Now he is hoping for their safe return home.
Girish said, “On May 21, seven members of my family including my mother, sister and brother, along with five distant relatives left to Uttarakhand on a package tour. About three days ago, they called to say that there was heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand. However, we could somehow manage to speak to them. We were told that they were finding it difficult to get accommodation.” Girish said he last spoke to the driver, who was accompanying his family members, and he informed that he was in the foothills of Kedarnath.
“There is no accurate update as of now except that my family members are in Kedarnath and the rainfall is only getting heavy. They were scheduled to return on June 6, and until they call, we can only hope the rains will subside,” he maintained.
No cloudburst
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre officials have rubbished reports of a cloudburst in Uttarakhand and clarified that the region was facing heavy rainfall. They also denied reports of 150 Kannadigas were stranded in the hills.
An official said, “The region is facing power supply and mobile phone connectivity issues, but the government is ensuring that all tourists are provided with food, shelter and medicines.”
