Coimbatore: A total of 40,193 candidates including 20,049 boys and 20,144 girls from the textile city appeared for the state board 10th exam in March. Of them 18,959 boys and 19,803 girls - a total of 38,762 candidates cleared the examinations, taking the overall pass percentage of the district to 96.44, a marginal improvement of 2.51 per cent over last year's performance.
Of the four educational districts, a maximum number of students - 14,754, appeared from Coimbatore. Another 10,261 students attempted the exam from S S Kulam, 9,411 students wrote the exam from Perur and 5,767 from Pollachi.
A total of 275 schools including, 41 government schools, one municipality school, five corporation schools, 22 aided schools, six self financing schools, 195 matriculation schools, one Anglo-Indian school and one ADW school recorded 100 per cent pass results compared to 231 schools last year. Of the 206 students who appeared for the examination in the differently-abled category, 194 cleared all subjects, taking the pass percentage to 94.17. A maximum number of 164 students scored centum in Social Science, followed by 119 centum scored in science and another 31 in Mathematics.
Last year, of the 26 Corporation schools only two schools managed to score 100 per cent pass results. However, this year the number of schools went up to five. Of the 1,831 students who appeared for the examination from the 26 schools including 1,195 girls and 636 boys, a total of 1,687 students passed the exams, out of which 1,151 are girls and 536 are boys, taking the pass percentages of boys and girls to 84.28 and 96.32 respectively.
Of the 17 children employed as child laborers who were rescued by a team of volunteers of the Coimbatore chapter of the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) as many as 15 cleared the examination. Among them student K Stephen from Coimbatore who was rescued from a unit involved in separating waste thread cleared the SSLC examination scoring 302 marks out of 500. In Tamil Nadu the SSLC examinations were conducted between 14 and 29 March and the results were declared on Monday.
