Udupi: Three dead as mini truck overturns

Udupi: Three people died when a mini truck, carrying pandal articles to be used for PM’s meeting in Udupi, met with an accident at Perdoor Choundi Nagar Cross on Sunday morning.

The truck was carrying the pandal articles from Chitradurga to Udupi, where Modi is expected to attend a program on May 1.

Police said the vehicle had left Chitradurga at 12.30 am and 14 people were travelling in the vehicle, three in the driver’s cabin and the rest were sleeping on the pendal material in the open carriage of the truck.

Police said the vehicle crossed Perdoor and around 7.30 am and while negotiating an S curve, the driver lost control over the vehicle and hit an electric pole.

The vehicle turned turtle down and the 11 people in the carriage got trapped under the pandal material. In addition the electricity line snapped under the impact of collision and it took 10 minutes to disconnect power supply. Only after that the passersby could help the victims.

One of them died on the spot and two others were declared brought dead when they were taken to hospital. Others are undergoing treatment at KMC hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Murthy (50) of Chitradurga, Mentro Pegu and Pameya Pegu, both hailing from Assam. Hiriadka police have registered a case.
