The Supreme Court's rejection of 50 per cent service quota for PG admissions is completely against public interest.

Chennai: The Supreme Court's rejection of 50 per cent service quota for PG admissions is completely against public interest, the Doctors' Association for Social Equality (DASE) said on Saturday. It urged the Centre to bring in a law to protect the interest of doctors and ensure PG students the quota. Continuing to demand exemption for the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Neet), Dr G.R. Ravindranath of DASE said, "The students of Tamil Nadu should be granted exemption to protect them as well the health sector in the state."

He demanded that local students in the state be given reservation for UG and PG seats and said that doctors and medicos would meet at the Chennai Collector's office on May 2, urging for the same. Students of Madras Medical College (MMC), also continued their protests on Saturday by playing parai and thapattam (traditional method of making an announcement) at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, to make the public aware of the issue. "We are fighting for our juniors and for the public at large, demanding that the government retain the service quota for PG admissions. On Friday, we had also held a candle light vigil at the Institute for Child Health for the cause," said Dr Thiyagarajan, a first year PG student in Orthopaedics at MMC.
