Dirty water claims 11 lives in Rajasthan

All of them were brought to the hospital between April 16 and 26 after complaints of vomiting and dysentery.

Jaipur: Eleven people including seven children have died in last 10 days in a state government-run residential facility for patients with mental illness at Jamdoli just 10 km from Jaipur-the state capital of Rajasthan. Those died included six girls and aged between eight and 35 years.

“Around 15 children were brought here with Septicemia, septic shock and seven children have died. The reason is very straight. Because of the bacterial infection which has the capability of spreading like a disease and because being mentally handicap and physically challenged they have very low immunity,” said Dr Ashok Gupta, superintendent of J.K. Lon Hospital. “Three kids are in critical condition. They are in ICU and the next 48 hours are critical,” he said.

Besides, three adults died due to same condition in Sawai Man Singh and another one was also reported dead. All of them were brought to the hospital between April 16 and 26 after complaints of vomiting and dysentery.

“Nothing can be said till we get postmortem report. We have sent food and water samples for tests,” said, superintendent of the facility, Anita Choudhary. It is suspected that contaminated food and water may have triggered the illness.
