Hyderabad: 12 stranded in Iraq come home

Hyderbad: Twelve people from the state who were stranded in Iraq, reached the city early on Friday.

They had gone to Iraq to work but had been subjected to forced labour, verbal abuse and threats, this newspaper had reported on March 16.

 

Mr Ganga Srinivas, one of the victims, said, “Following the request of Basanth Reddy, president of the Gulf Telangana Welfare and Cultural Association, K. Kavitha (Nizamabad MP) arranged flight tickets through Telangana Jagruthi.”

He said each of them had borrowed around Rs 35,000 from their families in India and paid the penalty imposed on them.

He requested the government to help them by providing employment.

Mr Basanth Reddy said he had approached Mr Manipal Singh of the Indian Embassy in Iraq, who contacted the employer and inquired about the situation.

 

“I approached the government to help them and it did. I request that the returnees be provided jobs as they are deep in debt,” he said.
