Cubbon Park to get motion-sensor LEDs to reduce power wastage

The plan is to install 800 such LED lights, which will respond to motion and environmental sensors, and also help save electricity.

Bengaluru: Bescom is planning to install motion-sensor LED lights at Cubbon Park, which will dim and brighten according to the movement of the people.

The plan is to install 800 such LED lights, which will respond to motion and environmental sensors, and also help save electricity.

A senior Bescom officer said, "These lights will glow depending on the movement of the people. If there is high movement, the light swill glow brightly and if there is low movement of people they will gradually dim. They can also sense and switch on during days when there is early sunset. These lights will be monitored by a centralised system and can be adjusted according to the weather."

He said, "During winter, the days are short and it gets dark by 6 pm. The lights can sense it and will start glowing automatically. When there is too much sunlight, the lights will switch off and also sense the movement of people. This will help save electricity and reduce wastage of energy."

He said, "For now, we are planning to install 800 such lights across Cubbon Park and depending on how effective it is, we will install them in other public places. Our intention is to cut down wastage of electricity. We have noticed that streetlights are kept on even during the day and in many such instances, the lineman would have forgotten to switch them off. With the modern LED lights, we don't have to worry about switching streetlights on and off."

Another officer said that these motion-sensor LED lights also consume less energy. "This project is carried out by the Technology Innovation Centre of Bescom, where we are trying to find various solutions to decrease the power wastage," he said.
