Bengaluru: 2,021 shops demolished at K.R. Market

A top BBMP official said that encroachments will also be cleared inside the three-floor market complex and regular inspections shall be held.

Bengaluru: In a major anti-encroachment drive carried out by the BBMP at K.R. Market on Friday, 2,021 shops were cleared and more than 200 loads of materials including tables, metal sheets and other temporary structures have removed. This all happened following High Court intervention, which made the officials take action against encroachments.

Around 48 tractors, 15 trucks, eight compactors, eight JCBs along with 390 BBMP workers, 30 marshals and the police gathered at the historical K.R. Market on Friday morning for the crackdown.

Fire and Emergency services had pointed out serious lapses in the safety measures at the market and this had invited the wrath of High Court, which had given an ultimatum of two weeks to BBMP to take suitable action.

After the drive, BBMP claimed that spots have been identified for the deployment of fire tenders and ambulances during emergency and no vending will be allowed in these spots and on the entire path leading to the market.

A top BBMP official said that encroachments will also be cleared inside the three-floor market complex and regular inspections shall be held.
