Poll code not to affect ongoing projects: BBMP

Residents fear the infrastructure works may be done in a hurry or get held up.

BENGALURU: In the wake of model code of conduct coming into force from Tuesday, residents of some areas are worried that infrastructure works going on in their neighbourhood will either be hurriedly finished, with little regard to quality, or will drag on, causing inconvenience to the public.

Works like asphalting, desilting, remodeling of tertiary drains and development of pavements have been taken up across the city. Some of the major works like white topping too is in progress in some areas.

Maia Joseph, a resident of Koramangala, said construction materials and huge machineries have been stocked on the narrow road making it extremely difficult for the residents of the area to use their vehicles. Even the children are finding it difficult to play.

The hot mix, the asphalting materials, road rollers and concrete mixers have been parked in Koramangala. These materials occupy major portion of the roads and navigating on the road is extremely difficult. Since the calendar of events for the upcoming assembly polls have been announced, there is no guarantee that these contractors and workers will ensure quality.

The problem is not just in Koramangala but across the city. Indiranagar, Thippasandra, Banasawadi, Vijayanagar, Yeshwantpur are some of the areas which are facing similar problems. BBMP officials will be busy with election duty and they may not bother about the quality of the work being executed. Further, they may not even worry if the work is completed or pending.

Residents worry that a delay in completion of the work by the contractor will cause long drawn inconvenience to them.

However, official sources in BBMP confirmed that the works which have already begun and tendered will not be affected.

The officials will ensure that these works will be completed, they added. They also assured that the quality of the work will also not be compromised as there would be a third party inspection and sample checking before releasing the money to the contractor.

However, during the construction or execution period residents may face inconvenience. Residents can complain about the inordinate delay to the BBMP office or the executive engineer, sources said. In the wake of code of conduct coming into force, no new projects that influence the voters will be taken up, they said.
