No varsity tag for existing players in Telangana

The government is still holding deliberations to finalise its policy on private varsities.

Hyderabad: The hopes of some educational groups who were aiming for private university status in Telangana State are likely to get dashed.

The Telangana government is keen on promoting greenfield educational campuses rather than giving varsity status to educational groups that already have multiple campuses in the state.

The government is still holding deliberations to finalise its policy on private varsities. Some of the groups aiming for private varsity tag are Malla Reddy, Anurag, CBIT, Sreenidhi, Aurora, St Mary’s and Bharat.

The managements wanted to send proposals requesting the government to consider the infrastructure available with them, but sources indicated that the government was not in favour of that.

“The objective is to promote greenfield campuses as in AP. The groups that got the nod in AP are building new campuses. No existing group was given varsity status there,” an expert said.

There were speculations that companies like Reliance and private universities from TN are interested in setting up new campuses in TS.
