Water for all? Need Rs 45,000 crore, says CM Siddaramaiah

The government aims to set up at least 7300 drinking water plants to provide safe drinking water, he said.

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Mr Siddaramaiah said that the state government needed Rs 45,000 crore for providing safe drinking water to all, as most of the ground water resources were getting depleted.

Speaking after dedicating over 1000 safe drinking water plants across the state to the public, Mr Siddaramaiah said the govt may have to divert around 62 tmc ft water for providing drinking water alone to people.

Since the government cannot provide Rs 45,000 crore, the project would be taken up in a phased manner. The government aims to set up at least 7300 drinking water plants to provide safe drinking water, he said.

“When we were young, we used to drink water from local wells, tanks and streams. Now, we are not getting water even in borewells. We are forced to provide water through drinking water plants,'' he said.

RDPR Minister H.K. Patil said Rural Infrastructure Development Corporation had set up the 1,000 drinking water plants in a record 100 days.
