Namakkal priest dies after fall

Other priests in the temple rushed Venkatesh Bhattacharyar to a private hospital there.

Namakkal: Venkatesh Bhattacharyar, 53, senior priest of the famous Sri Anjaneya temple in Namakkal, succumbed to the serious injuries he sustained while offering a garland to the 18-ft tall deity of Lord Hanuman from an elevated platform, temple sources said on Tuesday.

On Sunday, when Venkatesh Bhattacharyar was adorning the deity with a ‘tulasi garland’ from atop a wooden platform, it suddenly collapsed and the priest fell down from a height of about eight feet, suffering critical head injuries.

Other priests in the temple rushed Venkatesh Bhattacharyar to a private hospital there.

He was later shifted to the government hospital there on Monday evening, but he died late on Monday night without responding to treatment. Namakkal town police are probing into the tragedy.
