Contributory pension funds intact, well maintained: Tamil Nadu govt

The government clarification on the new pension scheme comes in the wake of a false propaganda against the new contributory pension scheme.

Chennai: The state government on Tuesday stated that the Jactto-Geo (Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisation members are spreading a misinformation campaign on the new pension scheme and said the contributory pension funds are intact and the accounts are well-maintained.

The implementation of this contributory pension has been transparent and the government had fixed the rate of interest on the accumulations at the credit of the subscribers at 8 per cent with effect from Oct. 1, 2018. Upto March end, 2018, the contribution of government employees and teachers was Rs 8,283.97 crore and along with a matching grant from the government plus an interest of

Rs 5,252.90 crore, a total of Rs 21,820.90 crore is in the public accounts, an official release from the State Finance Department said here on Tuesday.

“The contribution for the current fiscal is credited appropriately and the interest will also be credited in the accounts by the end of this financial year,” the statement said and added that the contribution and the interest of each government staff is maintained by the government data centre and the staffs could verify the status on http:cps.tn.gov.in/public.

The government clarification on the new pension scheme comes in the wake of a false propaganda against the new contributory pension scheme. “Hence, it has become necessary to explain the facts,” the release said.

The scheme implemented after 2003 warrants each government staff to contribute 10 per cent from the salary and an equal contribution by the government.

On Saturday, fisheries minister D. Jayakumar told reporters here that government would go “bankrupt” if it implemented the teachers and employees’demands on reverting to old pension scheme and enhance the pay of secondary grade teachers on par with the Central government teachers. “Employee salary and pensions would have to be paid borrowing money, leaving nothing for welfare schemes for the poor,” he had said while appealing to the Jactto-Geo members to give up their stir immediately.
