K Babu probe to be over in 2 months

Vigilance responds to High Court directive.

Kochi: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau on Monday informed the High Court that the probe against former Excise minister and Congress leader K. Babu in the Disproportionate Assets case would be completed in two months. Earlier the court had asked the agency to specify when it could submit the final inquiry report while considering a petition moved by Baburam, allegedly a benami of Babu, seeking to quash the case against him.

Vigilance Director Loknath Behra, also the state police chief, submitted before the court that the probe into the case has been hastened. Though the special cell of VACB serviced a notice to Babu to appear before it last week, the former minister failed to do so. “We will wait for a couple of days more before serving him with a fresh notice. We will rerecord his statement as he had approached the Home secretary stating that he wanted to add some information that he could not reveal before the earlier investigation officer,” an official said.

The VACB had registered a case against Babu in 2016 and along with two of his friends Baburam and Mohanan as co-accused in the case. In its report filed before the High Court recently, the VACB said it has no evidence to prove Babu’s alleged benami links with the Kochi-based realtor P.S. Baburam, the second accused in the case.
