Science City may give way to race course

No decision has been taken by government and alternatives are under consideration.

Hyderabad: Will the Hyderabad Race Course be shifted to the land meant for Science City at Budvel near Rajendranagar? There is a high possibility of that.

Ranga Reddy district Revenue officials have settled on the Science City land among five alternate sites for the Hyderabad Race Course. The 250-acre land had been allotted during the Kiran Kumar Reddy regime for the Science City but it had failed to take off. HMDA had earlier invited Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking consultancy services for the development of the Science City in PPP mode.

After coming to power, the TRS government decided to shift the Hyderabad Race Course, currently located in Malakpet under the jurisdiction of Amberpet revenue mandal, to the city’s outskirts.

On Thursday, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, during a “meet the press”, had again spoken about shifting the race course.

Race course authorities have also agreed to the government’s proposals if it provides about 200 acre land within the Outer Ring Road. Currently, the race course is spread over 117 acre of prime real estate.

As per the directions of the government, the Ranga Reddy district Revenue officials had identified suitable land at five locations including the proposed Science City lands.

HMDA commissioner Mr T. Chiranjeevulu meanwhile told DC that no decision had been taken by the government till date and the proposals for the Science City project was still alive.

The Rajendranagar RDO said that the race course authorities were visiting the proposed Science City lands but there were no clear instructions from the government.

The Rajendranagar Tahsildar told DC that the proposed Science City land was under GO no. 111. This, he said, was not an impediment but the land was not suitable for the race course.

"So far no instructions have been received from the government on the proposed Science City lands," he said.

Officials have identified 1,200 acre of government land available in Chandavelli and Sitharampuram of Shabad revenue mandal, about 200 acre in Kanakamamidi village of Moinabad mandal, 170 acre at Cherlapally and 200 acre at Janwada village under the jurisdiction of Shankarpally mandal apart from the proposed Science City lands. Sources said that the endowment land at Janwada, which is a neighboring village to the city, would be suitable for the race course but several cases were pending in the courts regarding the land.

"Only the lands at Kanakamamidi, Janwada and Budvel meet the requirements for the race course as they are located inside the Outer Ring Road," said sources.
