Hyderabad: Row erupts on boy's death

Parents allege hospital's medical negligence, probe on.

Hyderabad: A Class III boy student who suffered injuries while playing in school on Wednesday died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here on Thursday.

Hardhik Jena of Glendale Academy at Hydershakot was injured on his hand after he fell on a windowpane in the classroom.

He was shifted to Olive Hospital at Tolichowki, where doctors performed a surgery. After the surgery, he did not gain consciousness and died. Police registered a medical negligence case against the hospital. Meanwhile, the hospital management said an inquiry was ordered.

Police said that Hardhik Jena, 9, was the only son of software professional Ashish Jena, a native of Odisha who shifted to Hyderabad a few years ago and was residing at Puppalguda.

On Wednesday morning, during the interval at around 10.30 am, Hardhik accidentally fell on the glass window. The window pane broke and the glass pierced his left wrist, making a deep cut. The school staff rushed him to Olive Hospital at Tolichowki.

At the hospital, he was operated. The injury was more than half inch deep and three inch in length on the left wrist. On Thursday morning around 11 am, the boy died in the hospital, said Langer Houz inspector Javed. Parents alleged that he died of an overdose of anaesthesia and held the hospital and the doctors who performed the surgery responsible for the death. They lodged a complaint with the police against the hospital and the anaesthetist Dr Pasha and the plastic surgeon Dr Srikanth. “Only a post- mortem report will bring out the exact cause of death. Based on that, we will proceed,” he said.

The hospital denied charge of negligence and said a committee was formed to study the circumstances that led to the death. “We are working on three possibilities — postoperative complication, postoperative respiratory depression and underlying unknown cardiac problem,” said a doctor at the hospital. Based on a complaint from his father Ashish, a medical negligence case is registered against the hospital, police said.
