Chennai Port Trust goes green, to get solar plant

Project's prime feature is to reduce 250 kg Carbon Dioxide emission per day and reduce the heat effect in the hospital building.

Chennai: In accordance with the Shipping Ministry’s policy decision to make all major ports as Green Ports, Chennai Port Trust has decided to set up a solar plant and make it pollution free.

Thereby, a rooftop solar plant was commissioned at the port main hospital building on Friday.

“The Government of India has been encouraging generation of power through renewable energy sources, which is of prime importance, especially with a rise in energy generation cost due to high input costs and limited natural resources and an increase in the carbon emission gas,” said Cyril George, Deputy Chairman, Chennai Port.

“Hence, Chennai Port Trust has also taken steps to make the port a ‘Green Port’ by meeting its major portion of its energy requirement through renewable energy.”, he said.

The Chennai Port has committed itself to generating 500 KW solar energy, out of which 100 KW (Phase-I) was awarded to Alectrona Energy Pvt. Ltd. The project cost is Rs 92 lakh.

The project’s prime feature is to reduce 250 kg Carbon Dioxide emission per day and reduce the heat effect in the hospital building. Nearly 500 units will be generated per day, which would fulfil 40 per cent of the power required in the hospital.

For the remaining 400 KW, an estimate has been prepared for '3.68 crore. The scheduled date of completion of the project will be December 31 this year.
