Cotton prices touch record high

for the last two months, prices started increasing and ranged between ₹7,500 and ₹8,000 per quintal at the end of November

Warangal: Cotton prices have touched a record high — between Rs 8,500 and Rs 8,715 per quintal — at the two major cotton markets of Asia at Enumamula of Warangal and Jammikunta of Karimnagar districts on Tuesday bringing cheer to farmers who had braved the inclement weather and spent heavily on pesticides and fertilisers.

At the beginning of the season, cotton was selling at Rs 6,000 per quintal. However, for the last two months, prices started increasing and ranged between Rs 7,500 and Rs 8,000 per quintal at the end of November.

On Tuesday the price of the cotton recorded the highest of Rs 8,715 per quintal for superior quality at the Enumamula agricultural market of Warangal district and Rs 8,500 per quintal at the Jammikunta agricultural market in Karimnagar district.

Officials said that this is the highest price the cotton got in the last three years adding that it due to less production following heavy rains that lashed the state four months back. The high demand for the produce in the international market has also triggered the hike in the prices.

Meanwhile, farmers who had faced loss in the past are happy reaping benefits. Some say this is really a windfall.
