Police gear up for peaceful New Year bash

Apart from the local revellers, there are expected to be a lot of tourists coming to Hyderabad from different cities and countries.

Hyderabad: The city police has geared up to make New Year’s eve in the city free of harassment, vandalism and violence. They hope to ensure everyone has a safe and secure entry into the new year.

Women's safety is a top priority of the police on the night of December 31. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Ms Shikha Goel, additional commissioner of police, crime, said: “Considering the number of events taking place in the city, we have deployed extra forces and many She Teams from Saturday to ensure that women are safe.”

Apart from the local revellers, there are expected to be a lot of tourists coming to Hyderabad from different cities and countries to welcome the New Year. Pubs and hotels, clubs and societies will have their parties. Youngsters in groups roaring around on the roads in bikes and cars, drunk and screaming, are a common scene.

A senior police officer said, “Special drives for drunken driving start on the night of December 31, all the flyovers will be closed to prevent accidents. We see a lot of triple riding on bikes, traffic diversions, isolated places will be monitored and 220 patrolling cars and about 500 Blue Colts teams will be monitoring all areas.”

For churchgoers, police bandobast is given so that no untoward incident occurs. Police commissioner Anjani Kumar had a meeting with all hoteliers and issued them guidelines to keep a vigil on drug peddlers and usage of drugs during the new year parties. CCTV coverage and footage is very important during the parties. Maintaining music volume levels is mandatory.

Inspector B. Dhanalaxmi of the Lake Police said, “At Hussainsagar, during festival times, we see a lot of youth strolling around, even a lot of families all over. Around 50 police personnel will be posted with five police pickets on Tank Bund road and mounted horse police will be moving around the lake. Necklace Road will be closed from 11 pm on December 31 till 4 am of January 1, like last year. I request all those who come here for cake cutting and to celebrate here at the lake, kindly stay home and welcome the new year with your families.”

City police commissioner Anjani Kumar recently said, “The police force lays special emphasis on analysing the root causes of various problems so that a holistic method is developed to address issues which are similar in nature. This also helps to bring down the incident rate.”
