Hyderabad: Only 10 of 34 lakes are Hyacinth free
Hyderabad: GHMC officials have been ignoring the task of hyacinth removal. The corporation has identified 34 lakes to remove the weed but cleared it from 10.
Corporation officials now say the work would begin soon and be completed in a month.
Amid increasing complaints about mosquito menace from different parts of the city, the civic body in December last year had decided to intensify its battle.
With municipal workers clearing only a few lakes, the menace has risen again. In a few lakes, water hyacinth growth was found to have revived in just five days after removal.
According to a GHMC official, the civic body has removed hyacinth in 10 lakes till August, but the weed eventually came back.
The corporation is yet to finalise the tenders for another 24. The corporation has now decided to make the contractors accountable for the permanent removal of hyacinth.
Unlike previous years, the civic body has decided to give the task of clearing water hyacinth to contractors for a period of three years. The work is expected to commence next month.
A senior GHMC official admitting the civic apathy said, “to expedite the work, the civic body has decided to entrust the task of clearing hyacinth in lakes smaller than five acres to the entomology department. The bigger lakes will be handled by the lakes section in association with the irrigation department”.
