Bengaluru: Thieves targeting bikes parked outside homes

Till November 2018, 5,023 vehicles have been stolen, while in 2017, it was 6,156 vehicles and in 2016, it was 5,842 vehicles.

Bengaluru: While the city police are busy solving different criminal cases, vehicle thefts are becoming an increasing menace. Two-wheelers are stolen the most as people park their vehicles on the roadside and outside their homes at night.

Till November 2018, 5,023 vehicles have been stolen, while in 2017, it was 6,156 vehicles and in 2016, it was 5,842 vehicles.

A senior police officer said, “The highest number of vehicles stolen is two-wheelers. It is easy for the offenders to make away with such vehicles as people park their vehicles outside their homes and roadsides. Passersby too cannot identify these thieves as they think that the criminals could be the owners of these vehicles.”

He said, “Parking outside homes in residential areas is risky as no one monitors the vehicles. The culprits keep a watch and identify vehicles parked continuously at the same spot and target them. The thieves get duplicate keys done for different kinds of vehicles and that makes it easy for them to take the bikes away.”

The officer said that parking outside homes at night is dangerous. “We keep getting complaints about bike thefts and it is difficult to trace them. Soon after stealing the bikes, thieves dismantle them and sell parts in neighbouring states. Residents should install CCTV cameras at their houses, so that we can know how and when the incident took place. With CCTV, it makes it a little bit easy for us to nab the offenders,” he said.
