Bengaluru: Accused confesses to ATM attack
Bengaluru: The accused in the infamous 2013 ATM attack in Bengaluru, where a woman was brutally assaulted inside an ATM kiosk in the city, has confessed to his crime before a magistrate here on Friday.
The accused, Madhukar Reddy, who was arrested in February last year by Chittoor Police from Madapalli in Andhra Pradesh was produced before the magistrate on Friday by the city police.
While confessing to the attack on Jyothi Uday, a bank official, inside Corporation Bank ATM kiosk at N.R. Square November 19, 2013, Reddy asked the 65th ACMM court to pronounce the judgment soon and punish him so that he can complete the punishment term at the earliest.
"I confess to assaulting Jyothi inside the ATM kiosk. I do not need defendant lawyer and no need for court proceedings. Just pronounce the judgment and punish me for my crime," Reddy told the court.
The magistrate, however, told the accused that his crime would invite a life term punishment and it cannot be lessened, even if he confesses. The court said an advocate would be appointed for him and Reddy can consult him.
Gruesome attack
On November 19, 2013, around 7.30 am, Reddy entered the ATM kiosk and downed shutters while Jyothi was inside withdrawing cash from the ATM. He demanded money from her and when she refused he attacked Jyothi with a machete. The entire scene was captured on the CCTV camera installed in the kiosk. He then took the money and left the kiosk, downed the shutters, leaving Jyothi in a pool of blood. He also took away her mobile phone. The incident came to light nearly three hours later when passersby saw blood stains and informed the police. The police rushed to the spot and rushed her to a hospital. Reddy, a history-sheeter, had in 2011 escaped from a hospital in Kadappa, while serving a life sentence for murder.
