Rain damages in Chennai assessed

The Central team visited Royapuram, Vepery, Perambur, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu and parts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.

Chennai: Nearly a month after heavy downpour lashed out Chennai, a central team visited parts of Chennai to assess the damages caused by northeast monsoon, on Thursday. Another team went to Kanyakumari district, which was worst hit by cyclone Ockhi.

State revenue secretary B. Chandramohan said that the team would continue their survey of the affected areas in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts till Friday. “The officials will study the extent of damage to roads, infrastructure, loss of lives and areas that faced inundation during the downpour in these districts. The team will later submit its report to the Central government,” Chandramohan added.

The Central team, headed by Sanjeev Kumar Jindal, joint secretary in the Union home ministry, is likely to meet Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday.

The Central team visited Royapuram, Vepery, Perambur, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu and parts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. The team earlier conducted a meeting with revenue secretary B. Chandramohan, Chennai Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan and other higher officials at the state secretariat.

“We will submit the report to the central government within a week,” Nagamohan, a Central team member said.

The state government had sought Rs 5,255 crore assistance towards implementing permanent rehabilitation measures in Kanyakumari and another Rs 4,047 crore to cater to other parts of the state, including Chennai, affected by the northeast monsoon.
