Kerala: Regulator moots 4-year power tariff
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has proposed new regulations for announcing power tariffs for four years to enable effective long-term planning by consumers and producers. According to the draft of the KSERC (Tariff) Regulations for 2018-22 period released on Thursday, the power tariff for four years would be announced in a single order. But there would be a mid-term revision after two years. The draft will be finalised only after public hearing.
KSERC chairman Preman Dinaraj told reporters that the tariff framework would help the customers and producers in making long-term planning. Though there was option for mid-term review, there won't be much revisions as the tariffs would be prepared after taking into account the cost escalations involved.
The KSEB Limited and other distribution licensees were directed to give their projected income and expenditures for the next four years along with tariff proposals before February 28. "Our objective is to offer affordable power to the customers. However, the concerns of producers would also have to be considered," he said.
The new regulations would come into effect from April 1, 2018 and would be effective till March 31, 2022. Details of the draft regulations are available on the website www.erckerala.org. Public hearing will be held in Ernakulam on January 3and Thiruvananthapuram on January 10. The public could also send their suggestions to the commission.
