Kerala Motor Vehicle Department to impose green tax from January 1

The services of Road Transport Offices will not be available for vehicles not paying green tax.

Kochi: The green tax imposed on four-wheeler motor vehicles older than 10 years will become effective from January 1, 2017 in the state. According to a release by the Motor Vehicle Department the decision to impose a green tax on older vehicles was included in the finance bill of 2016. According to the MVD light motor vehicles will be charged Rs 200 per year as green tax while medium sized motor vehicles will be charged Rs 300. The charge for heavy motor vehicles is Rs 400 per year.

Non-Transport motor vehicles older than 15 years or more will have to pay Rs 400 as green tax for the next five years. Both transport and non-transport vehicles entering from other states will also have to pay the green tax at the border check posts. A fine of Rs 100 will be imposed on vehicles which have failed to pay the required amount as green tax. The services of Road Transport Offices will not be available for vehicles not paying green tax.
