Foreign contribution: Bengaluru religious trusts face ban

The banned associations can however file renewal applications online by February 28, next year.

Bengaluru: Out of 11,319 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) whose foreign contribution registration certificates ceased to exist with effect from November 1, thousands are based in Karnataka. They have been provided four months grace period to apply for renewal.

This list includes some elite organisations such as Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Society, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Trust, National Education Society of Karnataka, Karnataka Chinmaya Trust, Karnataka State Council For Child Welfare, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore East Rotary Trust, Bangalore Speech & Hearing Trust and Alliance Francaise, Bangalore.

According to the notice issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Foreigners Division (FCRA wing), the names of these NGOs were featured in the list of associations whose FCRA registration was valid till October 31 and have not applied for renewal by June 30.

According to the notice, these associations can however file renewal applications online on www.fcraonline.nic.in by February 28, next year. They should provide in writing as to why they were not able to apply for renewal within the stipulated time.

The explanation should be signed by the chief functionary or the authorised representative, along with requisite fees and documents, namely FCRA registration certificate and memorandum of association.

Sources told this newspaper that it was unfortunate that institutions that were known for their selfless service too failed to renew their FCRA registration on time. “If the FCRA registration of any NGO is cancelled, then the government is attacked. This list has been now made public to ensure that government does not land in another controversy,” the officer explained.
