Chittoor district suffers ₹ 1,294 crore loss due to floods
Tirupati: Officials have put the initial estimate of crop and infrastructure loss due to heavy rains and floods in Chittoor district at ₹ 1,294 crore. While crop damage forms the major chunk of loss, infrastructure worth ₹ 561 crore got destroyed.
Heavy rains that lashed the district from November 18 to November 20 affected all 66 mandals in the district. About 489 villages have been badly affected. Flash floods inundated 126 of them.
District administration led by collector M. Hari Narayanan evacuated over 9,000 people from various villages and shifted them to 106 relief camps. Crops, including those of horticulture, got destroyed over 4,895 hectares. R&B roads had been damaged to the extent of 539 km. 321.74 km of panchayatraj roads got destroyed. 57 cattle / livestock died in the floods.
Next in the list is total ₹ 2.41 crore worth damage to 1,330 houses. Victims are yet to receive any compensation.
The loss suffered by 500 assets of minor irrigation department has been estimated at ₹ 6.40 crore. About 201 works of RWS department faced ₹ 5.08 crore loss. ₹ 8.61 crore worth property got damaged in eight towns and cities of the district, including Tirupati and Chittoor.
