Pragya: I referred to Udham Singh

The BJP had immediately got into damage control and distanced itself from her statement and asked her to tender a public apology.

New Delhi: After her controversial remark ended up creating a major political furore, with BJP coming under fire from the opposition camp, party’s Bhopal MP and Malegaon blasts accused, Pragya Singh Thakur on Thursday tried to clarify that her comments in Lok Sabha was not to “insult” revolutionary Udham Singh.

Her remark on Wednesday — a repeat of what she had said during Lok Sabha polls campaigning after which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that he will never forgive Pragya for calling Nathu-ram Godse, Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, a true patriot — had left the party embarrassed.

“Storm of lies becomes so big at times that even day appears to be night but the sun does not lose its light. People should not be swayed by this storm. The truth is, I did not tolerate the insult to Udham Singh yesterday,” the Bhopal MP tweeted after the BJP removed her from parliamentary consultative committee and barred her from attending parliamentary party meetings of the ongoing Parliament session.

During the Lok Sabha polls campaign earlier this year, Pragya Thakur, during a roadshow, had said that Godse was a ‘deshbhakt’ and will remain a ‘deshbhakt’. She had insisted, “Those calling him a terrorist should instead look at themselves. They will be given a befitting reply in this election.” The BJP had immediately got into damage control and distanced itself from her statement and asked her to tender a public apology.

Meanwhile, the Congress and other constituents of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) are set to move a censure motion in the Lok Sabha against BJP MP Pragya Thakur for her remarks on Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse, sources said on Thursday.
