Nizamabad: Woman loses baby, kin beat junior doctors
Hyderabad: A junior doctor was injured at the Government Medical College in Nizamabad as attendants entered the operation theatre and damaged the anaesthesia equipment at 3.30 am on Wednesday.
A mother in severe labour pains came to the hospital on Tuesday night and doctors found that the umbilical cord was already out.
This led to reduce heart beat of the baby in the womb. The patients’ attendants were explained about the high-risk of conducting a C-section operation as the heart beat of the child had already reduced.
The attendants agreed and an emergency C-section operation was performed. But, the child could not be saved.
The angry relatives refused to listen and beat up the junior doctors and damaged equipment in the hospital.
The junior doctors and senior residents protested against the behaviour of the patients’ kin and demanded that an FIR be lodged with the police due to this unruly behaviour.
The director of health and medical education, K. Ramesh Reddy, also spoke to the Nizamabad police as such incidents were occuring frequently and making it difficult for doctors to take up high-risk emergency cases.
This incident has once again brought out the issue of security in emergency wards as patients with extreme high risk situations are not willing to cope with the tragedy and blame the doctors instead.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Telangana stated that the attacks have become frequent and that the government is not taking steps to protect the doctors.
The IMA along with other medical associations will discuss the steps that have to be taken in the emergency wards in all hospitals across the state to protect the young doctors.
