Kochi: HC raps state's double stance'

The Supreme Court verdict was in favour of the Orthodox faction in the long- standing disputes between the two factions.

Kochi: The High Court on Wednesday rapped the state government over the non-implementation of the Supreme Court verdict on the dispute between the Orthodox and the Jacobite factions of the Malankara Orthodox Church over administrative control of Piravom church.

Stating that the government was adopting double standard in implementing the Supreme Court verdict, the court cited the contrast in the government approach on the verdicts on Sabarimala and the Church. The government has deployed thousands of cops at Sabarimala while in the case of Piravom it has out forward strange reasons for the non-removal of 200 persons opposing the SC verdict. Instead of implementing the SC verdict in favour of the Orthodox faction, the government was trying to work out a compromise, the court said and added that the same approach was not seen in the case of Sabarimala.

The court later withdrew the word ‘agenda’ from the remarks on strong objections raised by the advocate- general. The members of the Orthodox faction have approached the court complaining that the state government was not implementing the SC verdict. The Supreme Court verdict was in favour of the Orthodox faction in the long- standing disputes between the two factions.

The High Court, however, had declined to intervene in a contempt court case filed by the Orthodox faction complaining that the verdict of the apex court was not being implemented.
