Hyderabad: Labourer dies while cleaning manhole

Narsing was hired by the residents of JNNURM colony.

Hyderabad: A 32-year-old daily wage labourer who was cleaning a manhole died of suffocation in Abdulla-purmet on Monday. Police said Narsing Rao and two others were hired by the residents of JNNURM colony to clear a blocked sewage line when the mishap occurred.

T. Narsing Rao, a resident of Abdullapurmet, was staying with his mother T. Anasuya, after his father Danaiah’s sudden death two years ago. While Anasuya was working as a sweeper in GHMC, Narsing who is unmarried, was working as a labourer. Narsing’s sudden death has left his mother Anasuya helpless.

She says that though she earns, Narsing was her only moral support after her husband’s death. “Though he was working on daily wage, he always took good care of me and was my only support. Now with this, I have lost everything and my life is in darkness,” a shocked Anasuya said.

On Monday, residents of Block #155 of JNNURM colony in Abdullapurmet gram panchayat hired Narsing, Narsimha and Karna to clean the sewage lines that were overflowing since Sunday.

The three started cleaning the sewage lines using long plastic pipes. Narsing was at one of the manholes, while the other two were at other manholes of the line.

“Narsing started cleaning the line with pipes and others were coordinating with him. After sometime, when he did not respond to the calls from his friends, they came looking for him and found him lying face down on the ground. He was dead,” Hayathnagar inspector, J Narender Goud said.

Residents of Block #155 said that they had hired the trio for Rs 2,000.
Village sarpanch T. Sabitha said that none of the residents complained about the faulty sewage line.

“They themselves hired the men for the work. We are pursuing with the government for a compensation of '50,000 under the Apadbandhu scheme. We are also trying to get compensation from the residents,” she said. Police registered a case of suspicious death and launched an inquiry.
