Hyderabad: Hotels get 20-day deadline to set up compost units
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has set a 20-day deadline for hotels and function halls to set up compost units, or face cancellation of their trade licence. The corporation will first issue red notices and cut the water connections of establishments that do not construct the pits. The next step would be to cancel the trade licence.
The corporation had set out a similar deadline in August but it was mostly ignored but intends to secure compliance this time by taking a stricter approach.
As per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, all establishments generating bulk garbage of 100 kg and above every day have to instal composting machines on their premises to process wet waste.
A total of 800 hotels and function halls fall under this category, and they will be covered in phases. The drive will start with three and five-star hotels.
Over 250 hotels in these two categories generate more than 100 kg waste every day. Of these, 148 have agreed to instal on-site composting units and sought time for the delivery of machines, an official said.
Of the other 102 hotels, many have failed to comply with the order citing different reasons, including lack of space and approval from the head offices.
The official said the trade licence of those failing to instal composting machines by mid-November would be cancelled. The GHMC has offered 25 per cent discount on its waste collection charge of '2.50 per kg for those installing composting units.
For the convenience of hotels, the GHMC has published a list of agencies which deal with the sale of compost machines on its website.
