As BBMP sleeps, Ejipura's civic woes overflow
Bengaluru: For the residents of Ejipura the list of civic woes is long – potholed roads, broken footpaths, garbage pile-ups, health hazards, no streetlights …, but their numerous complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
The area continues to remain an eyesore with bad roads, garbage pileups and frequent flooding. The residents claim that every year the size of the craters on the road grows bigger, posing a danger to motorists and pedestrians, but nothing has been done to fix them.
The footpath from Ejipura to Domlur, which passes through the army residential quarters, is either broken or totally non-existent at certain stretches. Due to poor lighting, these footpaths are not safe.
The residents allege that most of the streets in the area are in a pathetic state, but the civic officials have not done anything, despite numerous representations.
"This is not the first time we have complained about garbage menace. But no official has done anything to clear it. Every day we see people from other areas illegally dump garbage. Pedestrians are forced to walk on busy roads. There have also been accidents due to poor lighting and iron bars poking out of the footpath. But these incidents have failed to wake the municipal department from its slumber," said Arun Devapur, a local resident.
The dust from construction activities nearby diffuses into the air and causes eye irritation to motorists.
The residents claimed their woes increase manifold during monsoon, as the entire area gets flooded.
"Ejipura’s pathetic condition is the best example of BBMP apathy. The area is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and viral infections. If the same situation continues, then we all have to think whether BBMP should exist at all, because it has done nothing. I travel every day on the same route from Ejipura to Viveknagar Main Road and I am worried about the health of the people living in such unhygienic surroundings,” said Gautham C, a regular commuter.
We will penalise those illegally dumping garbage: BBMP
Murthy D, Assistant Executive Engineer, BBMP, Ejipura
Are you aware that illegal dumping of garbage has become a problem for residents at Ejipura.
Yes, it is because the area is located close to Inner Ring Road. Motorists stop their vehicles, dump garbage and scoot off. This happens every day in Ejipura and Domlur main road.
What actions you have taken against this menace?
Now we are cleaning most of the places in the area two times a week. We also caught and penalized some commuters for illegally dumping garbage.
What will be next plan to stop illegal garbage dumping?
We will continue to penalise the culprits and we are planning to place CCTV cameras in some places. We will also increase the frequency of the cleaning process to three times a week.
