1st open heart surgery at MGM

WARANGAL: For the first time an open heart surgery was conducted at the government-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital in Hanamkonda on Wednesday.

Vaddepalli Swapna, 31 a resident of Godavarikhani of Peddapalli district, who was admitted on September 8 was found to have a trial septal defect (ASD). Under the supervision of MGM superintendent Dr V. Chandra Sekhar, cardiac surgeons have conducted intra-cardiac repair of the ASD and saved the life of the patient. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle on the occasion, Dr Chandra Shekar said that the surgery was a milestone in the history of MGM Hospital.

He said since it was an open heart surgery, surgeons stopped the heart of the patient for 29 minutes and used a heart lung bypass machine.

With this, the ability to perform coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) surgery at the MGM Hospital has improved and would be helpful to poor patients who visit the hospital, he added.
