TN political leaders welcome SC judgment over Sabarimala temple

DMK president and Leader of Opposition, M K Stalin has welcomed the verdict. “This verdict has proved that 'men and women are equal.

Chennai: After the top court passed ruling that all women can enter Sabarimala temple, politicians in the state have reacted to the judgment here on Friday.

DMK president and Leader of Opposition, M K Stalin has welcomed the verdict. “This verdict has proved that 'men and women are equal. It is a historical one and should be a milestone, on the road leading to social justice, gender equality, women's empowerment.”

Similarly, Kamal Hassan, leader of Mallak Needhi Maiam, said, "the verdict is a clear indication that culture in the country keeps changing every 50 years. Those women, who want to go to the temple have the choice to go to Sabarimala temple for worshipping."

“The judgment is a welcome one, as it has re-established women's rights. Further, at a time when women’s rights have been spoken about for a while now, the Supreme Court has done justice. Moreover, god did not say that men made the rules, in which women cannot enter the temples. Now, the time has come to those who want to go have the choice to go,” said actor-turned politician Kushboo, Congress national spokesperson.

Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha MP, said, “we should not just stop with temples, women should be allowed anywhere especially in important positions like Parliament to make laws. We should appreciate the people who took it forward, not being pulled down by rising opposition. If you think everyone is equal in front of god, why should you discriminate against women.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran leader, Subramanian Swamy, praised Supreme Court's vedict on Sabarimala temple. Congratulating country's women, he emphasised that Shastras are allowed to be amended over time and it is also a part of Shastra. “Women's physique and bodily factions cannot be made to differentiate on the gender equality; article 14 doesn't take any such reasonable restrictions or unreasonable restrictions into account,” he said.

R Mutharasan, state CPI secretary, said that god is for everyone. “Finally, the apex court’s verdict has proved that superstitious beliefs have been struck down, while women's rights won,” he noted.

Thol Thirumavalavan, VCK, chief termed the verdict as’unprecedented one’. “While ban on women' entry into the Sabarimala temple has been lifted by the court, the hurdles to appoint women “Archakar”should be cleared," he said, congratulating the judges for giving this much-needed judgment, which has cleared the decks in terms of women empowerment. K Veeramani, leader of Dravida Kazhagam (DK) said that the judgment would always remain as a ‘revolutionary’. “When constitution upholds that there should be no either discrimination and disparity, such verdict will send a strong signal among those, who tried to ban women from being entered into the temple,” he pointed out.
