Overflowing drains bring out leeches

There are all kinds of worms to be seen, but there is no action or response from the municipal office, the resident added.

Hyderabad: Overflowing drains are leading to an increase in leeches, insects and other pests in homes near Kapra, Yapral, Bowenpally and Lal Bazaar.

Meanwhile, the roads are covered with black silt because the drains are completely clogged with plastic bags, clothes, shoes and other items.

Dr J. Sriram, a resident of Kapra, says, “We have more than 20 leeches on our walls. They are crawling out of the manholes. It’s a very scary situation, but no one at GHMC is willing to register our complaints. Their emergency team is not available to clear blockages, because of which these insects are crawling all over.”

Some residents are trying to get rid of the pests using acid and bathroom cleaning liquids.

K. Sudha, a local resident, says, “The drains are completely choked because the GHMC has failed to clean them. Superficial work was carried out in May, which caused the problem to exacerbate.”

“There are all kinds of worms to be seen, but there is no action or response from the municipal office,” the resident added.

Though the silt on the road is periodically removed by sanitary workers, no action is taken towards the clearing of clogged drains.

Whenever it rains, the drains overflow and silt accumulates on the road again.

Not only does the silt make the road slippery, it also emits a foul smell which residents living along the edge of the lake are forced to bear. S. Anuradha, a resident of Yapral, says, “There is an unbearable stench around the whole area, and we have been provided with no relief despite several complaints. Sanitary workers take pictures and go but there is hardly any action at the ground level.”
