Bengaluru: In a tragic incident, two boys aged eight and nine years died after consuming a chemical mistaking it to be a soft drink during a birthday party.

The incident occurred at Kilari Road in City Market police station limits on Wednesday night. The boys consumed the chemical used to polish gold.

The deceased have been identified as Saahil 8, and Aryan Singh, 9. Saahil, who was studying in second standard, was the son of Shankar, a goldsmith. The family hails from Uttar Pradesh. Aryan, a third standard, was a resident of Cubbonpet.

According to the police, Saahil was celebrating his birthday on Wednesday and his parents had invited his friends for a party.

Aryan’s mother had dropped him at Saahi’s house in the evening.

As Saahil’s parents were busy preparing sweets, the children were playing. Saahil reportedly consumed a chemical, that was kept by his father, mistaking it for a soft drink and offered the same to Aryan.

Within a few minutes, the children started struggling and Saahil’s parents, who saw them, immediately rushed them to a nearby hospital, where both died after a while.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the children had consumed sulphuric acid, which was used by Shankar to polish and melt gold. We have taken up an unnatural death case in this connection,” police said. City Market police have registered a case.
