‘Buildings not in accordance with safety norms’.

Hyderabad: A Technical Committee that was constituted to study the structural stability of buildings in the Secretariat is said to have recommended to the state government to demolish the structures as they were not in accordance with safety and standard norms.

The committee, headed by Engineer-in-Chief of the Roads and Buildings department, Mr Ganapathi Reddy, on Wednesday submitted its report to the Cabinet subcommittee set up to oversee the construction of the new Secretariat and the Legislature Complex.

Sources close to the government revealed that the committee obtained reports from the Indian Green Building Council, Fire Safety department and also other concerned agencies on the stability and safety of the existing buildings on the premises.

After perusing the reports and also based on their field inspection, the committee reportedly decided to recommend demolition of the buildings and construct new one as per modern safety standards and facilities to cater to the needs of future generations.

Sources in the government said that the Technical Committee was of the opinion to recommend to the government to construct the new Secretariat and Legislature complex in accordance with the norms of the National Building Code 2017.

The committee felt that construction of both new complexes in accordance with the Green Building Norms would save 20 to 30 per cent power and 30 to 50 per cent water.

Sources revealed that though Hyderabad was not under a seismic zone, the new buildings have to built in such a way that the structure should sustain even any kind of eventuality like earthquakes in the future keeping in view the fast changing conditions of the environment.
