Muharram preparations too delayed

The apathy of GHMC officials have raised many eyebrows from Muslim organisations.

Hyderabad: GHMC is yet to invite tenders for 100 ashookhanas in Hyderabad for the maintenance, renovation and minor repairs ahead of Muharram.

With couple of days for the religious event to begin, GHMC commissioner D.S. Lokesh Kumar was yet to clear files pertaining to ashookhanas, claiming that he has received the digital key to process them only on Wednesday.

Surprisingly, the file has been pending with former GHMC chief Dana Kishore since the last 10 days, even thou-gh proposals pertaining to 100 works, with an estimate expenditure of Rs 3.8 crore, were already cleared.

The civic officials did not expedite the works, despite several reminders given by local political leaders, including MLAs and MLCs from the city.

In response to the mounting pressure of public representatives to expedite work sanctions and start inviting tenders as only two days were remaining for Muharram, mid level officials responded saying the works had to be sanctioned by the commissioner.

While was former commissioner Mr Kishore was in New Delhi for a tour prior to his transfer, the newly appointed commissioner got a digital key on Wednesday to process the files to sanction work orders.

However, proposals were in place to take up repair and renovation of ashoorkhanas, with a budget of Rs 3.80 crore for works including lighting, drinking water, sanitation and other works enroute the Muharram procession route.
