Kochi: Protocol for conservation of Chalakudy river banks

A mapping is also being undertaken to identify obstructions in the flood- path areas along the banks of the river.

Kochi: The Chalakudy-based Hornbill Foundation has initiated a quick study on the development of a watershed-based river renovation and sustainable livelihood plan. A mapping is also being undertaken to identify obstructions in the flood- path areas along the banks of the river.

"There are several canals and channels connecting Chalakudy and Periyar rivers criss-crossing four or five panchayats in Ernakulam. Most of these outlets have been blocked or narrowed down with no water flow. The floodwater entering areas along the banks of Chalakudy river is a normal phenomenon which occurs every monsoon. The obstruction of the flood-path resulted in heavy flooding and delay in draining.

The foundation has undertaken a mapping and a study based on which a few proposals will be submitted to the panchayat authorities concerned," said Dr K.H. Amitha Bachan, founder of the organisation.

The foundation has already developed a protocol for conservation of Chalakudy river banks after extensive research spanning nearly 20 years. The protocol is being used by the Biodiversity Board, Land Use Board and the Forest Department.

"Documentation of the path of the river outlet and the linked channels of Periyar and Chalakkudy rivers passing through the panchayats will be done. We will consolidate the report soon and develop it into a watershed-based river renovation and sustainable livelihood plan," he added.

"Unscientific constructions and blocking the flood-path have to be banned and all constructions along the flood-path in future should be strictly as per the protocol.

The abandoned or barren paddyfields along these areas, which are the major water outlets, have to be revived which will prevent water- logging to a great extent. The area is similar to Kuttanad in many respects. We failed to tap the advantages of such a watershed area," said Dr. Bachan.
