Kerala pins hopes on World Bank aid

WB team to visit state, assess flood damage today; MoS Finance also likely to visit.

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government is pinning its hopes on World Bank assistance to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore as a WB team is scheduled to visit the state to assess the flood damage on Wednesday.

The delegation will visit various flood- hit areas to identify the requirements and hold discussions with the state government.

Minister of State for Finance Pon Radhakrishnan is also likely to visit the state along with a finance ministry delegation on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Pinara-yi Vijayan himself might initiate talks with the World Bank and finance ministry delegations.

The state government wants a low- interest fina-ncial assistance of '3,000 crore from the World Bank for infrastructure projects like drinking water scheme, housing and road constriction.

With the loss in the floods estimated over '20,000 crore, the state would press for more assistance from the centre as well as increase in the borrowing limits of the state.

So far, the Centre has granted '600 crore and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured Gover-nor P. Sathasivam that more assistance would be given to the state.
