Kerala flood victims share ordeal

The inmates told Mr Gandhi about their predicaments and sought his assistance to rebuild safe houses for them.

Thrissur/Alappuzha : Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday visited the V R Puram Community Hall in Chalakudy where as many as 800 flood victims, whose houses were either damaged or destroyed completely in the recent floods, are staying. The inmates told Mr Gandhi about their predicaments and sought his assistance to rebuild safe houses for them.

He announced at the relief camp after interaction with the inmates that the Congress party was trying to raise funds for rebuilding the destroyed houses.

"Life after the relief camps will be the most difficult phase of floods and Congress workers should extend every possible help to clean up the silt-filled houses. Besides that, we are trying to raise funds and construct as many homes for the flood victims. The entire country is proud of the resilience shown by the people of Kerala to tide over the flood calamites," Rahul said.

Rahul promises fisheries ministry

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, visiting relief camps in Chengannur and Alappuzha on Tuesday, said that a fisheries ministry would be set up if Congress comes to power at Centre.

Addressing a function organised to felicitate fishermen at Alappuzha, the Congress president said: "The services of fishermen should be utilised in Coast Guard. Life of fishermen too is in a precarious condition just like farmers. However, when Kerala faced a crisis situation, the brave fishermen ccame to the forefront ignoring their woes.
