Over 15 dogs poisoned, burnt at Chitalapakkam in Chennai
Chennai: Over 15 dogs were poisoned and burnt near Chitalapakkam on Monday with activists alleging that a local leader mixed the poison in calf’s carcass to save his hens from dog menace.
“We received a mail on Sunday from a resident saying numerous dogs were poisoned in the locality. When we reached the spot, we saw a calf’s carcass and dead dogs. Also, six crows died from feeding on the poisoned meat,” said Shravan Krishnan, an animal rights activist.
He further added that the local leader is doing this for the second time and previously, he had killed three cows. He alleged that the police are not filing a complaint on the leader due to political interventions.
As the bodies were highly decomposed, they could not be sent for a post mortem. Veterinary doctors who visited the site confirmed that the reason cannot be a disease and it has to be poisoning.
Another activist, Nishanth said this incident would have a ripple effect on the entire life cycle of the animals and birds in the area and might also damage wetlands. The local police has filed an FIR and the investigations are on.
