Bengaluru: Garbage collection hit Contractors protest
Bengaluru: Unsold goods of Ganesha festival are still lying uncleared across the city, but a tussle has broken out between contractors and the BBMP.
Garbage contractors have stopped giving compactors, lorries and other equipment necessary for pourakarmikas to carry out garbage collection and disposal, because of service tax issues. As pourakarmikas haven’t been paid, collection has suffered.
Members of Bangalore Mahanagara Swachate Lorry Maalikara Mattu Guttigedarara Sangha, led by their general secretary S.N. Balasubramaniam, protested outside the BBMP head office on Monday. Protesters said they have loaded collected waste into trucks, but it won’t be disposed till their issues are settled.
Mysore Narayan, state president, Pourakarmika Mahasangha, said that pourakarmikas are to clear garbage, but they are not getting material and support from contractors in many wards. A meeting has been scheduled by the commissioner to clear the standoff between the BBMP and contractors.
