Hyderabad: Six “tiffin bombs” surfaced on a road on Sunday in Choutuppal mandal following the recent heavy rains and land erosion.
The road is not in use now and police suspects these were planted years ago by the Rachakonda dalam of the Maoists who had a strong hold over the area a decade ago.
Farmers walking through the unused road connecting Devalamma Nagaram and Allapuram villages found the tiffin boxes partly showing up on the road. The mud layer over the road had washed away due to the heavy rains on Friday and Saturday.
When the boxes were found, the farmers got suspicious and informed the local police. Cops identified the tiffin boxes as devices planted at a depth of around two feet by Maoists, who are used to such actions. The devices were shifted to the police station after ascertaining that they would not explode.
The mud road is not in use for vehicles for more than a decade but farmers use it as a shortcut to reach their villages. A new tarred road had been laid 10 years ago, which is the main route for travel and transport.
Police suspects that the bombs weighing around one kilo each were deployed by the Rachakonda Dalam. The bombs got naturally diffused due to accumulation of mud and water in them.
“We have shifted them for disposal and a case is registered under the Explosives Act,” Choutuppal Inspector Naveen Kumar said.
