Kochi metro staff forms first union

Out of the 400 employees in the non-executive cadre around 250 are associated with the union activities.

KOCHI: The employees of the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) have formed a trade union comprising executive and non-executive staff members. The Kochi Metro Employees Union (KMEU), formed under the initiative of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will be formally launched on Monday by labour minister T.P. Ramakris-hnan at a function to be held in Kalamasserry.

The executive cadre in KMRL, consisting of assistant managers and above, has around 150 persons while the non-executive cadres comprising section engineer, assistant crew controllers, assistant section engineers, depot controllers, train operators, junior engineers, technicians, driver and peons number around 400 persons.

Out of the 400 employees in the non-executive cadre around 250 are associated with the union activities, said a release issued by the leaders of the union on Sunday. Jayalal. J (station controller/trainer operator) is the president of the KMEU while assistant station engineer Siby MM is the secretary.
