Hyderabad : Man attacks sister for marrying outside caste

Sources said Mounika, who belongs to the BC community, had fallen in love with Sai, a Dalit youth, of Thotapalli.

KARIMNAGAR: In an attempted honour killing, a man on Saturday stabbed his sister for marrying a Dalit boy in Hyderabad recently against the wishes of the family. The victim, Chittempalli Mounika, survived with injuries and is in a serious condition in hospital. The family was readying to go to the police station for counselling in Bejjanki mandal headquarters when she was stabbed. Mounika, 22, had married Sollu Sai, 22, on June 10.

Her brother, C. Nagaraju attacked Mounika in their house in Veerapur in Bejjanki mandal in old Karimnagar district when he saw her speaking on the phone with Sai, asking him why he had left her alone and asking him to take her back with him. Mounika suffered injuries on her stomach and fell down in a pool of blood. Hearing her screams, her relatives rushed to the room and shifted Mounika, with the knife still stuck in her body, to the government civil hospital in Karimnagar where she is undergoing treatment. Her condition was stated to be serious.

Sources said Mounika, who belongs to the BC community, had fallen in love with Sai, a Dalit youth, of Thotapalli. Their family opposed their relationship but the couple got married at an Arya Samaj mandir in Hyderabad. They posted their marriage photos on social networking sites, which is when their families came to know of the wedding.

Mounika’s family approached Sai’s father and persuaded him to separate the couple. He went to Hyderabad and brought the couple back. He dropped Mounika at the house of her relatives in Bidar, Karnataka. A month after staying there, Mounika returned to Veerapur to her family home. On coming to know of the dispute, Bejjanki sub-inspector Abhilash asked the family and couple to come for counselling a few days ago. Their second session was scheduled for Saturday. Asked why the police did not give Mounika protection, an official said the couple had been separated with the intervention of their relatives and she was staying in her family home.
