Supreme Court judgement gets mixed reactions

Women and child welfare committee joint director K Laxmi said all laws were misused in one way or the other.

Hyderabad: Men and counsellers welcomed the Supreme Court judgement on how the police should treat Section 498A cases.

“The three-member committee ordered by the court would be like a jury and will not let the Act be misused. A special police team will be appointed to deal with these cases which will ensure justice for women”, said advocate Ratan Singh. Counsellers working with the police had a suggestion.

“The committees must not have statutory limitations. It must have strict guidelines and not an abstract briefing”, said Dr C. Veerender, who manages counselling centres for Cyberabad police.

Women and child welfare committee joint director K Laxmi said all laws were misused in one way or the other. “The counselling aspect is welcome, the ultimate aim is to not ruin families”, she said.

“This was the worst act as the accused was guilty until proven innocent. The process of justice had become a punishment with many men unable to go abroad or enhance their career. This move will only save the family,” said Mr Kumar Jahgirdar of Child Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting.
