Neknampur to have biggest immersion pond
Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s biggest immersion pond will come up at Neknampur at the Chinna Neknampur Cheruvu. What's special about this pond is the fact that it used to be a lake but after it dried up due to successive years of poor monsoon, it turned into a garbage dumping site.
This spot is being revived again and a special pond is being designed to immerse idols after Ganesh Chaturthi. The pond is being designed in the form of a ghat and will have a capacity of 50 lakh litres. The ghat lies adjacent to the Chinna Neknampur lake but is divided with a natural rock formation, which will not allow the water in the lake to get polluted.
The project is worth '1 crore and is being seen as a big step ahead towards rehabilitating the other lakes in the vicinity, specially Ibrahim Cheruvu where froth has developed.
"The attempt is to simulate a real lake so that the devotees will not go to other lakes that are undergoing cleansing", said Ms Madhulika Choudhary, who is working actively on conserving the twin lakes. She added that it took a year of awareness activities and direct intervention of the Collector to discourage the dumping.
