Bengaluru: Tree axed for Indira Canteen!
Bengaluru: First it was metro and now for Indira Canteens, the trees in city are being mercilessly axed across the city. The latest to come under scanner is a rain tree on the maternity hospital premises in Jogupalya.
This was, however, done despite the assurance given by the BBMP and the forest department.
“It was illegal to chop off the tree. The BBMP Commissioner had given his word that no more trees would be cut for Indira Canteen. We are not against Indira Canteens, but there is no logic behind chopping trees,” said Vijay Nishanth, a tree doctor.
However, Deputy Conservator of Forest Appu Rao maintained that unless it is imperative trees would not be chopped.
BBMP Commissioner Manjunath said, “I have asked for a report from the joint commissioner and the chief engineer concerned if due diligence was taken before cutting down the tree.” Nishanth, however, maintained that the government should be concerned about the eco-system.
“I have posted before and after image of the tree which was cut down. It was a healthy tree and without any logic, it was knocked down. We caught the despicable act and hope now no more trees will be cut,” Nishanth added.
Through his Facebook post, Nishanth urged the citizens to be vigilant and vowed to continue his work against reckless cutting of trees.
